Cooperation Driving Transformation in the Shipping Industry

Posttime:2023-11-30 08:52:21 Hits:245

The shipbuilding industry plays a crucial role in the global maritime industry, particularly in the areas of green transition, shipping decarbonization, digitalization, intelligence, and sustainable development.

To achieve the transformation and development of the maritime industry, the active involvement of the shipbuilding industry is essential. Shipbuilders are responsible for realizing most of the technical solutions and equipment integrated into ships.

Be a reliable partner
China's shipbuilding industry has experienced rapid development and is now recognized for its high quality. China has become the world's largest shipbuilding country, with three major shipbuilding clusters in the Yangtze River Delta, Bohai Rim, and Pearl River Delta, as well as a robust global supply chain.

In the first three quarters of this year, China's shipbuilding industry continued to lead the global market, with increased earnings for shipyards. The completion rate reached 30.74 million DWT, a 10.6% increase year on year. New orders amounted to 57.34 million DWT, a 76.7% increase year on year. The orderbook stood at 133.93 million DWT, a 30.6% increase year on year. These figures accounted for 48.7%, 68.5%, and 54.7% of the global market share, respectively.

Yanqing Li, the secretary general of  China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry, stated at the Xinde Marine Forum in Hong Kong 2023 that Chinese shipbuilding has become a global business card and a reliable strategic partner for shipowners worldwide.

Win-win Cooperation
Decarbonization and digitalization have a profound impact on shipping-related industries and require an enhanced industrial chain within shipbuilding. Practical innovation is crucial in determining the direction and pathway for these transformations.

China's shipbuilding industry is actively driving green and low-carbon transformation, as well as digital and intelligent upgrading. It is also deeply involved in international maritime governance. Major shipyards in China are accelerating digitalization and intelligence, making significant progress in process optimization, quality improvement, and emission control.

Collaboration in ship design, building, and marine equipment supply has improved, leading to closer cooperation with shipowners. To effectively promote the transformation process, Mr. Li emphasized the need for close cooperation among stakeholders in the maritime industry. This includes finding technical solutions, business models, and policy incentives aligned with the International Maritime Organization's shipping decarbonization strategy for 2050 and the mandatory implementation of autonomous shipping outlined in MASS CODE by 2028.
